Not the best weather today so we’re driving around a bit. Whilst driving north along Lake Dunstan we see signs about Bendigo and old mines so we have a look. First is a little walk to the New Bendigo Mine. Exciting!
Until you get there that is as this is it, the New Bendigo Mine. I didn’t bring any torch anyway so this little walk was a waste of time
We then went to where the actual mines are/were, there are still some ruins to be seen
Like this one
And this one, the blacksmith’s place
Entrance to the actual mine is properly secured
The surrounding hills
Of so many old buildings in NZ only the fireplace is still standing
Luckily back in the day they had horses for this
After Bendigo we drive to Lake Wanaka, the ONLY thing we end up doing here is buy some (yummy) kebab and then head back to Clyde/Alexandra
The Vallance Cottage in Alexandra, after this we drove to Homestead Shelter near St Bathans, tomorrow will be another day of proper 4WD’ing
Some solid walls in those miners huts. Must have been a harsh life.
