Holiday Day 1 – Christchurch to Nelson Creek

Time for another holiday. The plan is to go north, go camping, go kayaking somewhere. The initial plan was to go to Molesworth Station but since rain was forecast the decision was made to follow to sun: to the West Coast. Here we are passing through Arthur’s Pass National Park, surrounded by all those mountains I so often fly to in my glider

We have a little stop at Lake Poerua

And at the Crooked River Reserve

Somehow we end up at Lake Haupiri, it turns out this is where they have the Gloriavale Christian Community, right on the other side on the lake

There are some walks to be done here, we decide to go on one

Good day for it

We forgot to put on our proper hiking boots, which was a bummer because there were quite a few puddles like this one

It’s beautiful here

This is where we turn around again, but those are some interesting walks that I’ll likely do some other time

The next thing we come across is Kopara

An old logging town, not sure why they would have needed a cannon

The local pub

The Parched Pilgrim

The place can be hired for weddings etc

They collect bottle openers

I imagine lots of line dancing will have taken place here

Wouldn’t pass a WOF

If I’m not mistaken this is the village’s post office

We end the day at Nelson Creek, where there’s a great campsite

Hungry! Time for dinner

Om nom nom
